Lake Erie Monster vol. 3
This marks 3/4 of a year since we've been shooting with John. Time flies. It's crazy.
The documentary we've been working on with him will be ramping up over the coming months. I think we're finally at a place that we may have something substantial.
I'll be editing all winter and into spring. I have my fingers crossed that we have a full length on our hands. We'll see what comes of it. I'd love for it to premier at TIFF 2013, that is if I hit the June deadline.

The Naked Zinester: Teaser Trailer
Here's the trailer!
The Naked Zinester Teaser Trailer from TurnStyle Films on Vimeo.
The Teaser Trailer for the short documentary "The Naked Zinester" coming soon from TurnStyle Films.
The Naked Zinester is a short documentary that explores the life and work of Aaron Tsuru. Aaron is an renegade photographer and zine maker who has risen to cult status on the internet for being to creator of tsururadio.com and tsurufoto.com
From Tsurufoto.com:
"Tsurufoto is the photographical field observations, wanderings & creations of Aaron Tsuru! I use photography (analog, digital, and variations & combinations of both), short films, and zines to celebrate all things beautiful, weird, & wonderful, exploring our imperfections that make us unique and perfect in our own way.
DIY, through and through... Half the fun is figuring it all out through trials and many, many errors. Some of our greatest successes came out of massive failures. When an idea pops into my noggin', I do what I can with
the resources I have to make it real. It's always worth trying. Many of my works are expressed through nudity & sexuality. I've been drawn into that world ever since the days of squinting at scrambled 70s & 80s late night cable euro "art films". Self-publishing a nudie zine, I walk a fine line between art & porn, but it's a line that is fun to walk along, exploring and challenging our held definitions of beauty & sexuality..."
Featured along with Aaron, is the lovely Miss Cherry La Voix. She fills us in on her life of Modeling, singing and burlesque. As well as her past collaborations with Aaron.

Aaron Tsuru

Lilith now available on DVD
Lilith is finally available on DVD and Direct Download today! I worked on this movie about a year and a half ago as an art department PA. I can easily say that I learned more being on this film than from much of college. It was a fantastic experience working under Kristen Adams, who is moving onto big things like Child of God from Cormac McCarthy and James Franco.
Lilith's director, Sridhar Reddy has been a well of information and has been a great support as we've gotten TurnStyle Films off the ground. He has a new super secret short film coming out soon that I can't wait to see.
So run over to Nehst and grab a copy of Lilith. You won't regret it!

I just finished the second cut of our Aaron Tsuru Documentary. Titles are completed. The cut is pretty locked in. All that is left is Color Correction, final mix and score along with any other little tweaks we decide to make. We've also come up with a title: The Naked Zinester
As I've said before, I can't wait for this to come out. Only another week or so until I start submitting it to festivals.

Aaron Tsuru Documentary Edit
Last month we shot a short documentary with photographer, Aaron Tsuru. We caught up with him only days before he and his wife were moving off to NYC. Along with model Cherry La Voix the footage is amazing. It has so many truly genuine moments, everything from giddy laughter to reflective insecurity.
Last night I worked on the edit for 8 hours. It was a real joy to finally get a good rough cut hammered out. I will be tightening up the edit over the next couple weeks as well as supervising the creation of the score by Jim Curtis. This is going to be a great piece to show off at festivals. I can't wait! I'm guessing the final run time with be somewhere in between 12 and 13 minutes, which means that it is the longest piece we've come out with yet.
My goal is to get it done by November 27th so I can meet the submission deadlines for CineKink NYC, Pasadena International Film Festival, FilmFest Dresden, Brooklyn Film Festival, Atlanta Underground Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, LA Film Festival and Aspen ShortFest. It's a big list and I hope we'll be accepted to most of them.
Below is a screenshot I took from Aaron's blog. A tease of the edit so far. That's all you'll get for now.

The Act of Killing
I was lucky enough to see the world premier screening of The Act of Killing
this year at TIFF and it was easily the best film I saw there. Spring Breakers was a ton of fun and The Master got very under under my skin, but nothing is going to stick with me like this movie. So I was obviously excited when I heard that Drafthouse Films had picked it up for distribution.
After a long Q&A with the audience the discussion moved outside the theater where I got to here the director, Joshua Oppenheimer, speak more about the process of making the movie. Once the crowd started to thin I managed to speak with him for a few minutes. After he complimented my Harvey Pekar shirt I told him about TurnStyle Films and some of the projects we have in the works. He was nothing but encouragement and passion. I left feeling even more energized about everything in the future.
And much to my surprise Joshua just reposted my status about the news of his film getting distribution, name dropped me and thanked me!

Thank You Joshua! I can't wait to watch your film again.

Matt Bors Kickstarter
I've posted a video here before by Matt Hyland interviewing Matt Bors, a friend and Pulitzer Prize Nominee. Well now Matt needs some help. He has a new Kickstarter up for a book he's putting together. Anything helps. I was way overdue in repaying him for years of enjoying of his work so I pledged $100. I understand if that is a little steep for some of you. But anything helps. This is a project that needs to get off the ground and Matt is a person who should be read by everyone. Consider it a contribution to saving society from stupidity.

Our showing went well last night. Jamie Overstreet, Kayla Muller ad myself were in attendance. The Q&A afforded us a great opportunity to talk to some of the viewers of our work. No real hard hitting questions. Just fun banter.
As a group we'd really like to thank Steve Felix and Akron Film & Pixel for making this night happen. We had a great time and it was great exposure for us. We would love to come back again.

TIFF Diary
Well we're back from TIFF. I feel completely energized. Now that I'm back in Ohio, this place is trying it's damnedest to bring me down. I miss the great conversation with strangers. The well read people. The patrons that surrounded me and chose to read while waiting instead of playing Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds on their IPhones. The TIFF volunteers that took no shit from overly entitled American tourists. I'm sure Canada has it's fair share or dimwits, douche bags and luddites but I was fortunate enough to not meet a single one, which leads me to believe their far better off than America in that respect.
It's the little things up there that restored my faith in my profession. The theaters are amazing and everyone calls them films, not movies.
I miss the chaos of the city. I'm feeling chocked by all the space around me.
I got to speak with one of my heroes Shane Smith, owner of Vice Magazine. I was shaking as he put his enormous hand on my shoulder and encouraged me in what I was doing and thanked me for the compliments I gave.
I could speak about the films we saw for hours. But I'll keep it short saying that they were all amazing and might be the best week of viewing in my entire life.
The live performance of American Beauty starring Christina Hendricks and Bryan Cranston and directed by Jason Reitman, was breathtaking. Janeane from Des Moines was hilarious and heartbreaking. The Master was completely intangible in the best possible way. The Art of Killing was exhausting and bewildering and possibly the best doc I've seen in the past 2 years. And Spring Breakers was the best possible movie I could have ended the weekend on. I'm a long time Harmony Korine fan and this was one of his best. I thought about it that whole way home and cannot wait to see it again. It won't let my mind go.
I'm going to do everything I have in my power to get to the point that we're festival hopping next year. I want to quit my job and work on movies every single day. I don't want to know where I'm going to sleep every night until my head hits the pillow and I want to change the world with my art. Fuck you if you're in my way.

The Locust - Sever the Toes
It is with great pride that I'm posting this video. I've been listening to The Locust since I was just out of high school. I can still remember how overwhelmed I was the first time I heard Plague Soundscapes. It opened whole new worlds for me. I can't imagine what I'd say to a younger me buying New Erections from Square Records in Akron. I doubt the young me would believe that I was talking to the Justin Pearson, let alone doing work for his most well-known and revered band. So without further adieu I give you Sever The Toes (starring our very good friend Jason Mingus)!

Retox in Pittsburgh
On June 26th Retox played in Pittsburgh. I finally got to actually have a conversation with Justin Pearson of The Locust. He's one of my musical heroes and I can firmly that I would not like half the music I do today if I had never listened to The Locust. Without him I would have never stumbled upon the amazingness that is Bitches Brew, probably my all time favorite jazz album.
I told him that in person and he seemed genuinely moved. He hooked Jamie and I up with free merch and got our names on the guest list so we could get in for free.
Retox was great. They took total control of the room and didn't let go. Their set last only about 20 minutes and I could have more, but that hungry feeling at the end of the show may have been the best part.

Jamie and I grabbed pictures with him after the show. It was definitely a huge night for me. I seem to be whittling down this hero list of mine pretty quickly. Only have a few left to go.

Filming, Filming, Filming
As of late we've been doing non-stop filming. We have 4 videos shot and in post. Some big projects that we're all very proud of. Any day now the All Dinosaurs KickStarter video will be up. Followed closely by the Signals Midwest Through the TurnStyle session.
After that we'll be releasing a super secret video that was a dream to do. I finally got to do a music video for one of my idols. Can't wait to short my first cut of it to him in person next week.

Then, biggest news of all. The short doc we're shooting on John G (pictured above, shot by Kayla Muller) looks to be on it's way to being our surprise first feature. After looking at the previously shot footage we all decided we need to follow this story to it's end. Can't wait to start assembling it as we shoot more.
